The Year That Was: Building the Metro Vancouver Hydrogen Hub

16 Dec 2025 | Blog, News Feed

2025 marked a turning point for HTEC and for hydrogen in British Columbia. We made some big strides in delivering real, operational infrastructure to power heavy-duty transportation—proving that hydrogen can help decarbonize one of the most challenging sectors of our economy.

This year, we advanced from vision to reality with our Metro Vancouver Hydrogen Hub. At its core is the Burnaby Clean Hydrogen Production Facility, designed to deliver clean hydrogen at commercial scale and strengthen network supply. Surrounding it is a growing station network, including our first heavy-duty hydrogen station in Tsawwassen, set to open in early 2026. We also opened a new station (SE Marine Drive), able to serve both light-duty vehicles and heavy-duty fuel cell trucks. Together with these developments and the rollout of hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks (FCETs), we’re taking a critical step toward a low-carbon transportation future.

Strengthening the Hydrogen Economy

Government partnership remains essential to advancing hydrogen in B.C., and we’re grateful for the continued collaboration that makes this progress possible. In 2025, HTEC secured $49 million from the Strategic Innovation Fund for our North Vancouver Liquefier project and celebrated the opening of our Burnaby Clean Hydrogen Production Facility with strong federal and provincial support.

The opening was a great success with honourable speakers Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada; Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions; and Jonathan Wilkinson, Member of Parliament, reaffirming strong government support for hydrogen development in British Columbia.

Trucks on the Road

Alongside infrastructure, it was also a big year for trucks—and for the first time, we had some of them running on B.C. roads. We expanded our fleet with Class 7 and Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell trucks, including multiple Hyundai XCIENT vehicles.

These trucks give fleet operators a practical, low-carbon solution to integrate into their operations through our VLC leasing program. While full deployment will begin in early 2026, we were excited to start building momentum and test performance this year. To do that, we partnered with FortisBC and Loblaw to launch B.C.’s first sustained commercial demonstration of a hydrogen-powered Class 8 truck, supported by HTEC. The truck has been successfully integrated into regular grocery delivery routes and continues to prove hydrogen’s real-world performance in challenging conditions.

As more trucks hit the road and infrastructure expands, safety remains a priority. Throughout the year, we worked closely with first responders, providing training and technical briefings to help build safety awareness and community confidence as hydrogen adoption expands.

An Industry First

One of the year’s standout achievements was our collaboration with DP World to bring Canada’s first hydrogen-powered rubber-tired gantry crane into operation. This milestone represents a significant step toward decarbonizing port operations and showcases how hydrogen can support demanding industrial applications. HTEC delivered both the hydrogen storage system and ongoing supply needed to keep the crane running successfully.

Building What Comes Next

Construction of our Tsawwassen heavy-duty hydrogen station is nearly complete. This station will become a cornerstone of the Metro Vancouver Hydrogen Hub—providing the infrastructure needed to fuel zero-emission heavy-duty transportation across the region.

Beyond infrastructure, we continued to engage with the broader hydrogen community through conferences, showcases, facility tours, and hosting international delegations. Despite economic headwinds and industry challenges, we’ve seen continued interest in our work, reflecting increased attention on hydrogen solutions in Canada’s clean energy transition.

Looking Ahead

2026 will bring even more milestones: the Tsawwassen heavy-duty station opening and a growing fleet of fuel cell trucks on the road.  HTEC is excited to continue its journey toward a sustainable future and looks forward to continuing to work with its partners, employees, and community to make that future a reality.
