HTEC Recognized at the Canadian Hydrogen Convention for Production and Mobility Projects

At this year’s Canadian Hydrogen Convention in Edmonton, HTEC was proud to be recognized for two initiatives: the Hydrogen Project Award for our Burnaby Clean Hydrogen Production Facility and the Mobility Award for our role in British Columbia’s first commercial hydrogen grocery delivery truck trial with Loblaw Companies Ltd.

The Core of HTEC’s Metro Vancouver Hydrogen Hub

The Burnaby Clean Hydrogen Production Facility is a key part of HTEC’s growing hydrogen hub. It features a one-tonne-per-day electrolyzer supplying clean hydrogen to HTEC’s station network, with an additional liquid hydrogen gasification system, bringing total capacity to 1.8 tonnes per day.

Powered by BC Hydro’s renewable grid, the electrolyzer alone can reduce emissions by over 10,000 tonnes of CO₂e annually, which is equivalent to removing about 2,400 cars or 100 heavy-duty trucks from the road. The facility was developed with support from the Canada Infrastructure Bank, PacifiCan, the National Research Council of Canada, the Province of British Columbia’s Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions, and BC Hydro.

Real-World H2 Truck Performance in British Columbia

HTEC was also given the Mobility Award for its ongoing role in British Columbia’s first sustained commercial demonstration of a hydrogen-powered Class 8 truck in British Columbia. Launched in fall 2025, the trial brought together a broad group of industry and government partners to demonstrate that hydrogen fuel cell trucks can be successfully integrated into existing freight operations while meeting real‑world requirements for performance, reliability, and operational continuity. The truck, a Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell hydrogen‑powered Class 8 truck, has completed more than 20,000 kilometres of zero‑emission grocery deliveries across routes linking Metro Vancouver, Chilliwack, Squamish, Whistler, and Merritt.

As a partner in this trial, HTEC supplies and dispenses hydrogen through one of its public retail stations—originally designed for light‑duty vehicles and later upgraded for heavy‑duty use—and leases the truck through its Vehicle Leasing Corporation (VLC). The vehicle is part of the Province of British Columbia’s Pilot Hydrogen Truck Project.

Building Momentum Through Partnerships

What unites both award‑winning projects is the role that strong partnerships across industry and government play in advancing hydrogen and scaling zero‑emission transportation. From infrastructure development to commercial fleet deployment, progress at this scale is only possible through collaboration.

These initiatives also underscore the importance of HTEC’s regional hub model, bringing together production, distribution, dispensing and end-use applications to support scalable hydrogen adoption in British Columbia and beyond.
